Halloween Healthy Treats

Every year kids from all over the celebrate Halloween, because this is the only annual event wherein they can dress up as their favorite heroes and eat as many sweets as they want. However, not all of them can enjoy the deliciousness of the treats they get from house to house. Especially for children who are suffering from diabetes. Nevertheless, Dr. Kenneth McCormick made it possible for children to still eat sweets without affecting their health.

Dr. McCormick is a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Diabetes Center. He studied carefully how kids can get pleasure from Halloween without worrying too much about their illness.

First, keep track of carbohydrate count. Parents and children should keep an eye on how much dosage insulin is injected and balance it with the amount of carbohydrates eaten. It is easier for kids who have insulin pumps rather than insulin via shot.

Second, have an alternative treat other than candies. You can switch candies for cash or bake them a delicious cake or cookie that doesn’t have too much sugar in them.

Third, consume the collected candies until after dinner. It is healthier if a kid eats a full meal first before chugging down some toffees.
