UN Needs $5.5 Million for Congo’s Cholera Outbreak
Many aid organizations together with the United Nations are currently working to gather $5.5 million, or 4.1 million Euros, for the cholera outbreak that has hit the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the United Nations spokeswoman last Friday, agencies have estimated a need for the sum of 3 million dollars for water sanitation and a 2.5 million dollar fund for the victims’ medical care. Four provinces along the Congo River need urgent care.
The rainy season is set to begin in Congo and Elisabeth Byrs stated the urgent requirement for the 5.5 million dollar fund. From the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Byrs stated the cholera case have reached 17,515 cases. These 17-plus-thousands are the ones that are registered and many are said to still be affected. This is the on-going rate of cholera since January.
Widespread sanitation is urgently to be implemented. Without the urgent assistance, cholera may cause intestinal infection that is fatal. Cholera is contagious.
