According to a new research patients who have undergone surgery and have low BMI have a 40 percent risk of dying. However, people who are overweight are more likely to live compared to people that are underweight. The weight of the patient can indicate the successful rate of a person that has been in a surgery. A low body mass can generate complications and risk the life of the patient no matter how health he is. A study was conducted in the University of Virginia Charlottesville that used 190,000 patients that underwent surgery in the previous years. They calculated the mass and height of the person and people with a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 are average weight, patients with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are overweight and 30 and above BMI are considered obese people.

The type of surgery does not depend in this kind of situation. No matter how simple the surgery is underweight people are still prone to death 30 days after the surgery is conducted. However, overweight and obese individuals are also in jeopardy because it can lead to heart failures, diabetes, cancers, arthritis and other diseases. This is why it very important to be healthy and remain a normal weight especially before a surgery.
