Niagara Falls Evening Spectacle

Those visiting Niagara Falls during the winter season are in for a treat. As daylight eases away, dusk brings the falls to life with an impressive array of colors, turning the falls into a vivid canvas, at once powerful and subtle, a contrast to the depth of the darkness that surrounds it. American visitors can enjoy the majestic light show from Niagara Parkway while those on the Canadian side can partake in the viewing from restaurants and hotel vantage points. In the winter both perspectives provide up to seven hours of non stop parade of light and magic. Though winter limits visitors’ ability to raft close to where the falls meet the earth below, it does provide a majestic view, albeit from afar.

The light show often commences with patriotic themes, reflecting the red, white and blue on the American side, while flashing the white and red on the Canadian falls. The light show often reflect colors that represent causes, such as the recent November display of white in honor of Lung Cancer Awareness. Niagara has been illuminated for around a century and a half, with color first appearing in 1907. The colors that light up Niagara transition using white in between colors, and the next color that comes to view washes from the top and flows downward until the entire falls are illuminated in color. It appears to observers as if colored fluid was washing over the falls, cascading into the rocks below. The show ends as it began, with a patriotic display. By midnight, the falls fade back into the darkness, ready to mesmerize when daylight breaks.
