Yet another jokester abuses social media to execute on a hoax, this time spreading the lie of Jon Bon Jovi’s death. This particular hoax features Pennsylvania native Jeffrey Goho who admits to the prank, claiming that he was unhappy that Bon Jovi has not been spending enough time behind a microphone. Goho further stated to the Asbury Park Press that since Bon Jovi the musician was spending too much time in the restaurant business, then why not tweet that Bon Jovi the musician is dead.

Of course in today’s world, news travels instantaneously, and the real-time drama caused by the hoax spread across cyberspace, as Goho’s tweets were in turn retweeted. The geometric rise in tweets proclaiming Bon Jovi’s demise, needless to say, piqued the interest of thousands. Goho intimates that “long story short, I was talking to my band members on their down time, and we got so worked up in the conversation, I just kind of took the liberty and started [the hoax], because I was so irritated.”

Bon Jovi found humor in the widespread rumor, and at a Dec. 19 concert in New Jersey mentioned it on a few occasions, even pretending to take frantic phone calls from concerned friends and family members. Bon Jovi later posted a “proof of life” picture in which he mused, “Heaven looks a lot like New Jersey.”

Goho now admits that he “never really thought it would get out of Pennsylvania.” Not surprisingly, Goho had to deal with countless hate tweets hours after tweeting the lie, after fans and observers became aware of the hoax.
