JC Penney Too Pretty Controversial Shirt Design

JC Penney, a perennial destination for families conducting traditional back to school shopping, is in a bit of hot water following its controversial line of shirt designs. Parents have been calling to complain about shirts marketed for girls that feature the following statement front and center “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.”

Parents are steaming mad and are complaining about the “inappropriateness” of the shirts. One parent complained, “Stop selling clothing with sexist messages for girls.” Parents complain that the shirt designs diminish the importance of school work, and in many ways, dismisses academics in favor of arguably less important pop culture. One shirt in particular underscores parent concerns when it expresses “Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out?”

The online community moved expeditiously, declaring the JC Penney designs “inappropriate and sexist,” and launched a petition to demand that JC Penney drop the garment from their shelves. To its credit, JC Penney pulled the shirt from its website and released a statement of apology. Kate Coultas of JCPenney corporate communications later stated: “We are not happy about the shirt! We’re looking into it right now, to find out how it happened. It was only online, not available in stores, and we have removed it from the site.”
